What are the signs of condensation?
The most obvious symptom of a condensation problem is going to be water streaming down the inside of windows, particularly bedroom windows in the morning (even on walls). Single glazed windows are more likely to be affected than double glazed units. Unsurprisingly this will be more of a problem when the weather gets colder.
Mould
Mould or mold as some spell it can be virtually any colour, with the most common being black, green, brown and white. Mould growth can also be various shades of yellow, orange and pink. It can grow on virtually any surface but is particularly common on
- Walls and ceilings - particularly in corners, window reveals or along edges
- Underneath a bay window
- Behind curtains
- Behind the television
- Under or behind a bed
- Behind wardrobes and furniture
- Leather shoes & handbags
- Clothes in wardrobes
- On bedding - particularly when the bed is pushed up to an outside wall
An earthy or musty smell is also very common, particularly if the house has been empty for a while.
You are more likely to notice it after being away for a weekend or even just a few hours.
Damp patches appear on plaster in ‘odd’ places, particularly on outside walls. These patches can appear and disappear on a regular basis.
When and where does condensation occur?
Condensation can occur at any time, but it is more likely to occur at night because the air temperature falls, which can cause humidity to rise.
As surfaces in the home become colder there is an increased likelihood of condensation forming, especially on windows or external walls.
An example of this is, if you take a bottle of milk out of the fridge (even in summer) water vapour 'condenses' out of the air onto the cold surface of the bottle. Your outside walls or windows are acting like the milk bottle.
Fortunately, there are ways of Controlling Condensation, and this is where we can help you.
